A functional medicine approach to eczema
Rather than treating eczema as a skin problem to be managed from the outside in, functional medicine looks for what’s driving the flare-ups in the first place. Eczema can affect far more than the skin itself — it often has a real impact on confidence, sleep and day-to-day wellbeing — which is exactly why understanding the root cause matters as much as calming the symptoms.
Underlying drivers
What causes eczema?
Eczema rarely has a single cause. It typically develops from a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers that activate the immune system and weaken the skin’s natural barrier. A family history of eczema, dermatitis, asthma or allergies noticeably raises the likelihood of developing it, pointing to a genetic thread running through many cases.
As with several other skin conditions, the gut-skin connection is central to how we approach eczema. A growing body of research shows just how closely gut health and skin health are linked — the gut microbiome plays a major role in regulating immune activity, controlling inflammation and maintaining the strength of the intestinal lining. When that balance is disrupted (a state known as dysbiosis), the gut lining can become more permeable, a condition often called “leaky gut.” This allows toxins, pathogens and undigested food particles to pass into the bloodstream, triggering an immune response that can surface on the skin as eczema and other reactive conditions.

Treatment approach
Why symptom management alone isn’t enough
Conventional eczema treatment typically combines topical and oral therapies — corticosteroid creams to calm inflammation and itching, moisturisers to support the skin barrier, and for more persistent cases, immunosuppressants such as calcineurin inhibitors. Antihistamines are also commonly prescribed to ease itching and help with sleep.
These approaches can genuinely help in the short term, but because they don’t address what’s driving the condition, symptoms often return within weeks or months of stopping treatment. At Edinburgh CFM, our consultations focus instead on therapeutic diet, targeted supplementation and complementary interventions aimed at the root causes — reducing inflammation and rebuilding the skin’s barrier from the inside out.
Our approach
Our approach to eczema
Nutrition
We focus on a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet built around whole fruits and vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids and fermented foods — supporting immune function and a healthy microbiome.
Targeted supplements
Where appropriate, we may recommend oral or topical supplements to ease symptoms, address dysbiosis and leaky gut, and help regulate immune activity.
Functional testing
Testing can include food allergy testing alongside gut health markers such as the SIBO breath test, Candida testing and parasite testing, to pinpoint what may be triggering flare-ups.
Additional treatments
Your practitioner may suggest further treatments or lifestyle interventions with proven benefit for skin conditions, such as light therapy.

★★★★★Working with Rob was a truly transformative experience. His guidance not only helped me navigate a wide range of symptoms but also gave me the knowledge and tools to build lasting, healthy habits. Alex
★★★★★Edinburgh CFM has been life-changing for me. Living with eczema was overwhelming — it felt like it was taking over every part of my life. I joined the 6-month programme hoping for some guidance, and what I got was so much more. With Rob’s support I now understand the specific foods and lifestyle triggers that were making things worse. For the first time my eczema is under control without relying on steroids — and I finally feel empowered in my own skin.
Rebecca
★★★★★My daughter was having health challenges and someone recommended the centre. She received a diagnosis of gut issues and found out she had SIBO. With the help of our practitioner we were able to get her back to school so she could continue her studies for her exams. Highly recommended.
Joan
★★★★★I came to the centre with a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s. I hadn’t been able to find a clinic that would provide understanding and a way to approach the disease without just suppressing symptoms. I feel like I matter and so do my symptoms. Progress has been far greater than through any other treatment option, and at each appointment I can share where I am and look at the next steps. I would highly recommend this clinic.
